AR glasses eye strain: practical fixes

General guide for XR/AR display glasses such as RayNeo, XREAL, VITURE and Rokid. Not medical advice.

Display glasses like RayNeo, XREAL, VITURE and Rokid put a large virtual screen in front of you. For many people they're comfortable for hours. Others get tired eyes, a heavy feeling or headaches after a short session. Usually the cause is fixable. This guide lists general fixes first, then explains where per-eye tuning on a PC can help.

Note: this is general information, not medical advice. If discomfort is strong or persistent, stop using the glasses and speak to an eye care professional.

General fixes

  1. Fit. If the glasses sit crooked or too high, each eye looks through a different part of the lens. Try all nose pads and adjust until the screen looks level and sharp in both eyes.
  2. Correct vision. Uncorrected short-sightedness or astigmatism forces your eyes to work harder. Use prescription inserts if your glasses support them.
  3. Lower the brightness. A very bright virtual screen in a dim room is tiring. Use dimming lenses or lower brightness.
  4. Bigger text. Use 125–150% Windows scaling so you don't squint at small text near the edges.
  5. Keep content central. Constantly glancing to the corners strains your eye muscles. Keep your main window in the middle.
  6. Native resolution and refresh rate. Scaled, soft images make your eyes keep trying to refocus. See our blurry edges guide.
  7. Take breaks. A common rule is 20-20-20: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  8. Start short. Build up session length over a few days.
  9. Check for misalignment. Close one eye, then the other. If the image jumps, tilts or changes size, your eyes are being asked to fuse two mismatched images.

Why eye misalignment matters

Your brain merges the left and right images into one. If one image is slightly higher, rotated or a different size or color, your eye muscles keep compensating. You may not consciously see a problem, but it can feel tiring. Small manufacturing tolerances and how the glasses sit on your face both contribute. More on this in our misaligned image guide.

How Complete VR Studio helps

Complete VR Studio is a Windows PC app for per-eye tuning of XR glasses. For comfort, the relevant tools are:

RayNeo Air 3 is fully tested. XREAL/Nreal, VITURE and Rokid have manual profiles that aren't validated yet. Software can reduce mismatch between the eyes, but it can't guarantee comfort for everyone.

Trial, price and how to get it

Complete VR Studio is a Windows 10 (version 19041 or newer) and Windows 11 x64 app, currently at version 1.0.0-preview.10. Premium features are included in a 7-day trial from install, and basic viewing keeps working until day 90. Activation costs about $5 in Bitcoin during the trial, or about $25 after it, paid in Bitcoin only. It's built security-first. See trial & pricing and compatibility for details.

FAQ

Why do AR glasses give me a headache?

Common causes are poor fit, uncorrected vision, high brightness, small text and slight misalignment between the left and right images.

Can software reduce AR glasses eye strain?

Per-eye alignment, size and color matching can reduce the work your eyes do to fuse the image, but fit, vision correction and breaks matter too.

How long should I use AR glasses at first?

Start with short sessions and build up, taking regular breaks.
