USB-C video (DisplayPort Alt Mode) and adapters for XR glasses
XR glasses expect a USB-C port that outputs DisplayPort video ("DP Alt Mode"). Many desktop motherboards and some budget laptops have data-only USB-C.
How to check
- A DisplayPort or Thunderbolt icon by the port usually means video.
- The spec sheet should say "DisplayPort" or "DP Alt Mode" for that port.
- Test a USB-C monitor in the same port.
No video USB-C?
- Brand HDMI adapters: XREAL, VITURE and RayNeo sell adapters that take HDMI in and power the glasses; they need external power.
- Desktop GPUs: some have USB-C video; otherwise use an adapter made for glasses.
- Generic "USB-C to HDMI" cables go the wrong direction and won't work.
